Today’s tech snack can be found at the following url: http://www.hemingwayapp.com/
What is it and how is it used?
Despite the name, the tool is not specifically an app.(though there is a desktop version that can be downloaded for PCs.) Hemingwayapp is a web based text editor. It is very simple to use. No username or password is required. All students have to do is access the url, click on the write button and then either copy and paste their writing or directly type their writing into the site. Then they just click on edit button. After they click on edit, they will receive instant feedback about ways to improve their writing. Feedback is color coded and suggestions are given. There are color coded suggestions for wordiness, weak adverb use, passive voice, and complicated words and phrases.
Classroom implications:
This tool is an excellent tool to use as students go through the writing process. You can also put the URL on your website for students and parents to use from home. It works on any browser and can be used with students of multiple grades/levels.
Ah, a simple snack that is both satisfying and useful! This one will become a top menu item for sure! Hope it is useful!
