What is it and how does it work?
Piktochart is an online tool that allows you to create infographics. Using Piktochart, you can create web based, presentation and report based infographics. It is web based so it will work on any Internet enabled device including smart phones and tablets. Like most Web 2.0 tools, Piktochart has free and paid plans. For the purposes of this blog, I will concentrate on the free features.
To start using Piktochart, you create a free account by signing up with an active email account and creating a password. Once you create an account, you have instant access to the Piktochart dashboard. From the dashboard, you will select the type of project you want(infographic, presentation or report) and then you can create your project. You can start creating your project by deciding if you want to create a new presentation from scratch or by using a premade template from the Piktochart collection. Once you click on the type of project you want, you will be taken to the online interface.
Since Piktochart is web-based, your project gets automatically saved. When you are done creating your infographic, you may download it as a picture or share it as an online link.
Class implications
Infographics offer a great way to reach your students. Instead of creating a standard powerpoint, why not create infographics to convey information? If you have access to an LCD projector, you could project your infographics to your class during sessions. You could also upload any of your infographics to your class website, blog or school LMS( Learning Management System.)
You can also have your students create their own infographics to review content or make presentations. Depending on the age and needs of your class, you may want to consider creating a class account where students would have the same username and password to create their presentations. While the interface is easy to use, I wouldn’t recommend using this tool with students in grades K-3. Older elementary students can use this tool with guidance. This tool is versatile so it can be used by students and adults alike.
Ah, a wonderfully delicious snack! Until the next time at the café!
