What is it?
Edpuzzle is an online tool that lets you add content to online videos. Similar to other tools like Edted and educannon, (reviewed here), you can add assessment questions to the videos. Unlike edted and educannon, however, you can also add audio voice overs to videos. While edted and educannon allow you to edit videos mostly from youtube/teacher tube, with edpuzzle you have more choices of online video sources to choose from. With edpuzzle, you can edit videos from edpuzzle’s collection as well youtube, khan academy, learnzillion, national geographic, edted, veritasium, numberphile, crash course and vimeo. You can also upload your own video!
Edpuzzle is free to use, but does require that you create an account with a username and password. You can also login using your gmail and/or edmoto account information. Once you create your free account, you can create a class by simply clicking on the “create a class” button and assigning a name to the class. Once you create a class, edpuzzle will automatically create a class code. This is how students will “enroll” in your class. After you have created your class, you can start creating video lessons by clicking on the “assign a lesson” button. From there you will click on the “find a video” button, put in the keywords in the search box and locate the video you want to edit. Edpuzzle walks you through the editing processing with step by step guides.
Once you have created your video lesson, you can share it with your students.**Note: you can share your edited videos via a url link but unless students make an account, their answers will not be recorded.*** Students need to create a free account in order to access your videos so that you can keep track of who has viewed what video and see the answers they have given to your questions. In order to create an account, students will need to create a username and password.
Once they create their username and password and have logged into the site, students will be asked to input their class code. You simply give the students the code, and then they will be able to see any video lessons you have created for them.

Edpuzzle will work on any browser and is available as an ipad app, and chrome extension. They are currently working on developing an android app.
Classroom implications
Edpuzzle is a great tool to use if you are trying to create a blended learning or flipped classroom environment. Students can go through the content at their own pace and review content as needed. Also, you can have students view content at home and then you don't have to take time in class to go over it. One of the best parts about edpuzzle is that youtube videos are viewable through edpuzzle even if your school filter blocks them! So students can also access your video lesson during your class sessions.
If you have an lcd projector, you can share your edited videos with your students and engage them in a whole class activity (this may be better for younger students). For younger students, you may want to create a class account, but that would mean that you couldn’t track individual’s progress or scores. With older students, you could have them edit videos so that they can explain the material in their own words.
Oh, what a yummy snack! I like these new menu items….until next time at the Café!
