So what is it?
Brainrush is an online source that allows you to create online games and flashcards for your students to access. While there are other online sites that lets you create your own games using templates, brainrush is unique in that the game templates they created are all based on Adaptive Practice™ technology that applies the science of learning. According to their site “each game engages your brain in rapid-fire practice that adapts to your exact needs, so learning is maximized during every second of play.”
So how does it work?
When you first get to brainrush, you have to create a username and password. After you do that, you will be able to create virtual classrooms, create brainrushes(that’s what they call the games), and search the library of premade brainrushes.
There are two ways that students can access the brainrushes you have assigned: you can create their usernames and passwords or you can have them create their own username/passwords. If you chose to have them create their own username and passwords, you have to know their e-mail addresses to give them an invite. If you chose to this option, students will then receive the invite, be asked to create their own account, then they are asked to activate their accounts via an e-mail link. Once they activate their accounts, they can access any brainrushes you have assigned.
Due to the age of the students I teach, I wouldn’t recommend having them create their own username and passwords, simply because it is not intuitive for them to check their e-mails for an invitation. (However, older students would be able to handle this requirement). It is up to the teacher’s discretion which option they choose.
Here’s what I like about brainrush: Teachers can assign brainrushes and track individual students’ progress. The templates for creating brainrushes are easy to use and understand and provide different ways of presenting information for students.(including an option for adding audio files to a brainrush)
